Quick Need-to-Knows Before You Plant Ranunculus

When should I plant these in Seattle?

In Seattle (USDA zones 8b and 9a), plant ranunculus corms from September through early March.

Ranunculus like our winters and need several weeks of cool weather before they bloom.

How do I plant them?

Soak the corms in room-temperature water for three to four hours, then plant them right away, tentacles down, 1 to 2 inches deep and about 6 inches apart. You can plant straight into the ground outside, or presprout them indoors first.

When will they bloom?

Bloom time depends on when you plant and on the variety. If you plant them in the fall, you will likely see blooms in April. I tracked my own ranunculus bloom time in When Do Ranunculus Bloom in Seattle?

What is a corm?

Ranunculus, also called Persian buttercup, grows from corms rather than true bulbs. A corm is a dried, calamari-looking root. They arrive dehydrated, so soak them before planting. I sell the largest corms available for each variety.
